LC Baseball Adds Three Wins, Now 47-7

 

The Hurricanes fought hard in South Carolina, winning three out of four against USC-Sumter.  Louisburg moved to 47-7 overall and 21-7 in Region X, while USCS is now 33-16, 14-12.


Game One
LC 3  USC-Sumter 2

Louisburg Baseball swept USC-Sumter 3-2, 15-2 in Region X double header action Saturday afternoon at Riley Park. 

The #3 Hurricanes improved to 46-6 overall, 20-6 while Sumter falls to 32-16, 13-12. 

In Game 1 on Saturday afternoon, Tim Brechbuehler picked up his tenth win while striking out four and allowing two runs on four hits.  Josh Roeder relieved Brechbuehler in the bottom of the seventh to secure the win forcing a fly out for the last out of the game giving the 'Canes a 3-2 victory. 

Sumter jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning while both runs were unearned.

The Hurricanes struggled to manufacture runs in the next three innings leaving six runners left on base.  In the top of the fifth Louisburg scored its first run behind a SAC fly from Chris Robinson scoring Marcus Wojtkowicz cutting the lead to 2-1.

In the top of the sixth, Louisburg, led by two back-to-back walks from Josh Bowers and Augie Ayers, started a two-run rally as Wojtkowicz and Houchins singled giving the 'Canes a 3-2 lead. 

Zach Houchins batted 3-for-4 with one RBI and Wojtkowicz went 2-for-2 with one RBI for the Hurricanes.

Zach Houchins went 3-for-5 with two RBI and a homerun (14) en route to a 15-2 victory in Game 2 Saturday afternoon. 


Game Two
LC 15  USC-Sumter 2

Tony Urban (7-1) threw 5.0 innings allowing two runs, two strike outs and five hits.    Cody Johnson and Aston Lover pitched 1.0 innings a piece giving up no runs and no hits.

The 'Canes scored three runs in the third as Brandon Rawe's RBI double scored Wojtkowicz, Ayers' RBI single plated Steve Nyisztor, then Ayers would score off of an RBI single from Tucker Coward

Sumter would close the gap to 2-3 as they scored their only two runs of the game in the bottom of the third.

Louisburg would stretch its lead to 7-0 in the fourth as Rawe would get his second double of the game plating three runs.  Tyler Long's SAC fly to center field scored Rawe for the last run of the inning.

The Hurricanes would explode for six runs on seven hits in the seventh inning to bring the score to 15-2. 

Rawe had a career high four RBI, going 2-for-4 with two doubles.  Steve Nyisztor went 3-for-4 with one RBI.  Ayers and Coward had two hits apiece.

 

Game Three
LC 0  USC-Sumter 2

Josh Roeder (5-2) took the loss in 1.1 innings pitched while striking out four batters and giving up a two-run walk off home run in the bottom of the eighth to give the Fire Ants the win.  Starter Cody Johnson tossed 6.0 innings striking out six, walking two, giving up no runs before being relieved by Roeder in the seventh.

USCS's Lawhon (2-2) earned the win striking out one in 1.2 innnings pitched.

Both teams would remain scoreless in seven innings as the 'Canes left eight runners on base compared to the Fire Ants 5. 

The Hurricanes would threaten in the fifth and sixth but would leave runners in scoring position both innings.

In the bottom of the eight, USCS's right fielder Price, launched a walk off homer to deep right field to end the game, 2-0. 

Marcus Wojtkowicz led the way for the 'Canes going 2-for-4. 

 

Game Four
LC 4  USC-Sumter 3

Louisburg opened the second game with a 2-0 lead in the first inning on RBI singles by Chris Robinson and Augie Ayers, but the Fire Ants countered with one run in the bottom of the third closing the margin to 2-1. 

The Hurricanes added one run in the fifth inning when Jake Watson's RBI SAC fly to left field scored Tucker Coward, then USCS cut the lead to 3-2 in the same frame on a fielding error by the 'Canes Josh Bowers.

Louisburg scored an insurance run in the top of the sixth giving the Hurricanes a 4-2 lead when Augie Ayers' single plated Tyler Long.

USCS would threaten in the bottom of the seventh scoring one run, closing the gap to 4-3 but were unable to manufacture the tying run giving the 'Canes a 4-3 win.

Augie Ayers went 2-for-2 with two RBI.  Chris Robinson went 1-for-3 with one RBI.

Louisburg returns to action next Saturday as they host Rappahannock in their final regular season doubleheader at Frazier Field.  Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
