'Canes Sweep Guilford Tech Titans
The LC Baseball team sweep the Titans of Guilford Tech, improving to 31-3 overall and 6-3 in Region X play. Guilford Tech fell to 13-13, 5-5.
Game 1
Louisburg College 6 Guilford Tech 0
Tim Brechbuehler (6-0) threw a complete game shutout allowing three hits while striking out six and walking only two batters to lead the Canes in Game 1.
Louisburg opened up the game scoring two in the bottom of the first inning. Steve Nyisztor walked, Zach Houchins singled and after a SAC bunt from Chris King, Kyle McCrossen had an RBI groundout that plated Nyisztor. Zach Houchins, would then cross the plate for the Canes second run of the inning on a balk from Tech's Dylan Thompson.
The Canes increased their lead to 6-0 in the fifth. Houchins reached on an error by Tech's short stop and stole second. Chris Robinson's two-out RBI single scored Houchins then Tyler Long blasted a line drive down the right field line for a stand up triple plating Robinson. Louisburg would add one more run on a single by Tucker Coward bringing Long in for the last run of the game for the Canes.
Tucker Coward went 3-for-3 with an RBI and one run to lead the Canes. Houchins, McCrossen, Jake Watson, Josh Bowers, and Long each had a hit apiece.
Game 2
Louisburg College 3 Guilford Tech 2
Houchins and Augie Ayers lead the 'Canes going 2-for-4 with one RBI apiece. Ayers' RBI double in the bottom of the sixth inning scored the Hurricanes first run of the game closing Tech's lead at 2-1.
The 'Canes played from behind until the bottom of the seventh inning in Game 2 when Brandon Rawe singled, Ricky Schattauer advanced him to second on a SAC bunt, and Steve Nyisztor would move him to third on a single to RF. Zach Houchins' SAC fly to left field would plate Ehrsam and tie the game 2-2.
Tied 2-2 going into the bottom of the ninth inning, Tyler Long started off the rally when he singled and stole second, after a Steve Nyisztor walk, Zach Houchins followed with an infield single. Chris Robinson's came to the plate with the bases loaded and laced a single to LF to drive in the winning run.
Guilford would threaten in the top of the eight but remained scoreless leaving two on.
Hurricane reliever Josh Roeder was able to stall the Titans in extra innings to earn the victory. Roeder, who relieved Louisburg starter Tony Urban, was credited with the win and is 3-1 on the season. Urban threw seven innings allowing only two runs on eight hits with four strikeouts. Roeder tossed two shutout innings as he struck out three batters and allowed no runs on only two hits.
Titan's reliever Adam Kirkpatrick took the loss. Chris Erker was the starting pitcher, allowing two runs, both earned, on eight hits in seven innings.
Game 3
Louisburg College 8 Guilford Tech 0
Louisburg pitcher Cody Cox struck out 7 and teammate Steve Nyisztor had 2 hits, leading the Hurricanes to an 8-0 victory over Guilford Tech Sunday afternoon at Frazier Field.
Chris King was the leading hitter for the 'Canes in the two games, going 3-for-5 with two RBI.
Cox (5-1) finished brilliantly, fanning three of his seven batters he faced before being replaced in the seventh by Zach McCormack. Cox allowed no runs on one hit in 6.0 innings. McCormack finished up with 1.0 innings of scoreless relief.
The 'Canes jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when Chris Robinson led off the inning hit by pitch. An early error by Tech's short stop allowed Tyler Long to reach advancing Robinson to third who would then score off of a single by Tucker Coward. Josh Bowers would start a two run rally after reaching on a fielder's choice. Then, behind back-to-back throwing errors off Tech's catcher, Robinson and Bowers would both score.
Louisburg would add three runs in the fourth inning. Ricky Schattauer stole second after being hit by pitch and would score on a RBI single by King. Kyle McCrossen followed with a walk, King scored on a double by Chris Robinson. A wild pitch by Guildford would plate McCrossen.
Game 4
Louisburg College 5 Guilford Tech 4
Louisburg's Cody Johnson (7-0) got the win for the 'Canes, pitching five innings with two runs on six hits, and three strikeouts. Josh Roeder finished up with two strikeouts, one run and two hits in one inning of work.
Guilford Tech led the charge in the first inning taking the lead 1-0 with a RBI triple by Zach Burkhart scoring Ernesto Fernandez.
The Hurricanes would even the score 1-1 in the bottom of the second inning on Tucker Coward's one out RBI SAC fly to right field that scored Chris Robinson. Robinson walked to lead off the inning.
After both teams earned a run apiece in the third, the 'Canes took its first lead of the game in the bottom of the fourth. King doubled, advanced to third on Robinson's ground out then scored off Tyler Long's RBI single.
LC would take a 5-2 lead going into the top of the seventh inning as Tech threatened with two runs of its own. But Roeder struck out the final out of the inning to pick up his ninth save of the year.
Nysiztor, Houchins, King, Long, Coward and Marcus Wojtkowicz had one hit a piece for Louisburg.
The 'Canes won 5-4 to take the four game series sweep.
Louisburg is 33-3 overall and 9-3 in Region X. Guilford fell to 13-15, 5-7.The Hurricanes defeated Tech in yesterday's double header action 6-0, 3-2.
The 'Canes are back in action this weekend when they take to the road to face Region X opponent and #13 ranked USC-Lancaster in a four game series. Saturday's double-header begins at 1:00 p.m.
