LC Baseball Gets First Taste Of Defeat
Louisburg College baseball team's 27 game winning streak came to a halt in Florence, SC this weekend.
Game 1
Louisburg College 4 Florence Darlington 5
In Game 1 on Saturday Tim Brechbuehler (5-0) started for the 'Canes and was hit early by the Stingers. FDT scored two runs in the first inning on an infield throwing error and a home run by Tech's Rubino.
Brechbuehler threw five innings giving up four runs on six hits, two stikeouts, and walked five batters. Daniel Hyatt (0-1) took the loss for the Hurricanes giving up the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning. He struck out one batter and gave up two hits.
Louisburg opened up the game scoring in the first three innings opening the lead 4-2. Zach Houchins' double in the first set the stage for Jake Watson to score on a SAC fly from Chris King.
The Hurricanes would continue their scoring in the second behind a double from Steve Nyisztor plating Chris Robinson (HBP) and Tyler Long(BB) bringing the score to 3-1 going into the bottom half of the inning.
Louisburg would keep the Stingers at bay with a scoreless second inning for the home team before tacking on an additional run in the top of the third as Zach Houchins hammered a solo home run over deep center field.
The rest of the game would be belong to Tech as they scored one run in the third, fifth and sixth innings to take the lead 5-4. The Hurricanes had a scoring opportunity in the top of the fifth putting two men on a fielder's choice by DH Kyle McCrossen and a Tucker Coward walk, but were unable to score.
Houchins lead the 'Canes going 3-for-4 with an RBI. Nyisztor added two RBI.
Game 2
Louisburg College 1 Florence Darlington 9
In Game 2, Louisburg scored the first run of the game on a home run by Zach Houchins but Tech scored seven runs in their first two innings of work and never looked back. In only their second loss of the season, the Hurricanes managed only three hits, their lowest on the year and committed 4 errors as a team.
Taking the loss for the Hurricanes was Cody Cox (4-1). In just 1.1 innings of work, he gave up five runs on just one hit, while striking out two. The 'Canes went to the bull pen and used five different pitchers who combined for seven hits and four runs and one strike out.
The Hurricanes were lead by Zach Houchins who went 1-for-2 with an RBI.
The Hurricanes losses brings their record to 27-2, 4-2 in Region X play. Florence improves to 16-7, 5-1.
Game 3
Louisburg College 1 Florence Darlington 4
The Stingers remained scoreless in 5 innings behind the stellar pitching of Tony Urban. Before a rain delay sent both teams back to the dugout in the bottom of the fourth inning, Urban faced 14 batters, gave up only two hits, struck out two and walked one.
The Hurricanes put up a run in the top of the second to take a 1-0 lead off of Kyle McCrossen's solo homerun. Louisburg's shutout bid ended in the bottom of the sixth when Josh Roeder was called in relief to replace Urban and gave up five of Tech's eight hits and four runs.
The 'Canes threatened in the top of the fifth with bases loaded but were unable to score. Josh Roeder (2-1) suffered his first loss of the season for Louisburg, allowing four runs on six hits in 2.1 innings. He had one strike out. McCrossen was Louisburg's leading hitter, going 1-for-3 with a home run.
Steve Nyisztor, Tyler Long, Tucker Coward and Jake Watson all had one hit apiece in for the 'Canes.
The Stingers won, 4-1.
Game 4
Louisburg College 14 Florence Darlington 4
Louisburg pitcher Cody Johnson struck out four and teammate Zach Houchins had three hits, leading the Hurricanes to a 14-4 victory over Florence Darlington Tech. . Tech is Augusta is 17-8, 6-2.
Tech swept the 'Canes in Saturday's doubleheader by the scores of 5-4 and 9-1.
Zach Houchins was the leading hitter for the Hurricanes in the two games, going 3-for-6 with a homer and one RBI.
Cody Johnson(6-0) got the starting nod for the 'Canes. In five innings of work he fanned four batters while allowing four runs and six hits before being replaced in the sixth by Willie Sligh. Sligh gave up no runs and struck out two batters in 1.0 innings. Josh Bowers finished up the game with 1.0 innings of scoreless pitching and sat down one batter.
The Hurricanes took a 2-0 lead in the first inning behind Steve Nyisztor's leadoff single and two fielding errors from the Stingers. Chris King would plate Nyisztor on a fielder's choice and Kyle McCrossen would ground out to the short stop that scored King.
Louisburg added three runs in the third. McCrossen reached on a fielder's choice, advanced to second on a single by Tucker Coward and a walk by Tyler Long would load the bases. Two runs were scored when Chris Robinson singled plating McCrossen and Coward. After two passed balls and a wild pitch, Long would score giving the 'Canes a 5-0 lead.
The Hurricanes blew the game open with four runs in the fifth and sixth innings, started by a two run RBI single from Jake Watson, an RBI single from Augie Ayers and an RBI double by Nyisztor.
Chris Robinson was the 'Canes leading hitter, finishing 3-for-3 with three RBI and one run. Houchins went 3-for-4 with one RBI and a homerun.
Louisburg is 28-3 overall and 5-3 in Region X competition.
The Hurricanes will face Wake Tech Wednesday at the USA Complex in Cary, NC. Game time is scheduled to start at for 3:00 p.m.
