Hurricanes Claim Four Wins Over Ann Arundel CC
The Louisburg College baseball team swept the series against Ann Arundel Community College last weekend, 4-0.
Game 1
Louisburg 16 Ann Arundel 7
Friday afternoon the Louisburg Hurricanes defeated the visiting Pioneers of Ann Arundel Community College at Frazier Field. Five 'Canes combined for two or more hits en route to a 16-7 victory. With the win, Louisburg is 14-0 on the season.
Cody Johnson picked up his third win pitching 1.2 innings, setting down three batters while only allowing two runs on two hits. Behind the efforts of Louisburg's pitching staff, AACC was only able to connect for three hits while striking out fourteen times.
The first inning was all Louisburg, as the Hurricanes exploded for seven runs off five hits behind a grand slam from transfer Josh Bowers. Jake Watson led off the inning with a single before stealing second as Zach Houchins was able to reach first on a throwing error from Ann Arundel's third basemen. With runners at the corners, Tucker Coward's HBP loaded the bases allowing for Chris King's RBI SAC fly to right field to bring in the Cane's first run of the inning. An RBI single from Augie Ayers and back to back walks from Marcus Wojkowciz and Snooter Merryman would plate two more runs before setting the stage for Bowers' trip around the bases.
The Pioneers would score in the next four innings but never come close enough as the 'Canes responded with runs of their own in all but two innings.
Jake Watson paced the way for the Hurricanes at the plate going 3-for-4, three runs and two RBI. Snooter Merryman went 2-for-3 and had two runs and three RBI.
Game 2
Louisburg 8 Ann Arundel 7
Louisburg's Steve Nyisztor hit a three-run homer and teammate Chris King hit an RBI SAC fly to center field for the game winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning in Saturday's opener.
The game was tied at 7 going into the bottom of the ninth when Hurricane Steve Nyisztor reached first base on an infield single, Nyisztor promptly stole second base.
Following a walk to Zach Houchins, both runners advanced on a wild pitch and sent runners to 2nd and 3rd. Following a strikeout, Chris King hit a deep fly ball to CF allowing the winning run to cross the plate.
Josh Roeder (2-0) was the winning pitcher in relief. He escaped a seventh-inning jam, allowing two hits while striking out four in 2.2 innings.
Game 2
Louisburg 11 Ann Arundel 7
In game 2, Ann Arundel saw a 6-0 lead slip as the Hurricanes jumped ahead scoring three runs in the second, five in the third and two in the fourth to make the score 10-6 heading into the visitor's fifth inning.
Five 'Canes would combine for five hits as Zach Houchins and Chris King would double while Chris Robinson, Tyler Long and TJ Ehrsam would each record a single in the third inning plating five runs.
The Pioneers would threaten in the top of the seventh scoring one run off one hit but would never regain enough momentum as the 'Canes take the double header 11-7.
Zach McCormack got the win for the Hurricanes tossing 3.1 innings with two strike outs while only allowing two hits.
Steve Nyisztor led the 'Canes in Game 1, going 2-for-5 with three RBI and a home run. Chris Robinson was Louisburg's leading hitter in Game 2, going 3-for-3 with two doubles, two runs, two RBI and a home run. King went 2-for-3 with two RBI, Long was also 2-for-2 with three RBI, and Ehrsam went 2-for-4 with three RBI.
Game 4
Louisburg 15 Ann Arundel 4
The 'Canes (17-0) earned the victory behind the strong outing of freshman LHP Tony Urban (3-0) and the bats of Steve Nyisztor and Chris King.
Urban tossed two innings of scoreless ball before giving up one earned run in the top of the third. He struck out five in five innings during his fourth outing as a 'Cane to earn the win.
Nyisztor led a Hurricanes scoring effort that began in the first frame, when LC put a fivespot on Pioneer starter Robert Warwick. The inning featured four singles and a hit by Nyisztor, the first of his three hits in game four.
Warwick took the loss in the opener. He pitched 2.2 innings and allowed thirteen runs on 11 hits, despite recording three strikeouts. The loss was his first of the season.
LC added to its early lead posting eight runs in the third and two in the eight. Chris King led 'Canes batters going 2-for-4 with a double, a single and two RBI.
Head Coach Mike McGuire commented, "Anytime you win four games it's a good weekend. Although we didn't get the quality of starting pitching we had been getting, we had some guys step up and pitch well out of our bullpen. Offense really stepped up this weekend. I believe good teams can beat you in a variety of ways and we have won every way maginable so far this season."
