Hurricanes Claim Four Wins Over USC-Salkehatchie

 

Tim Brechbuehler hurled his way to a team-leading ninth win in Game 1 with the help of a five run, fifth inning by the 'Hurricanes offense while Game 2 saw the 'Canes claim a dramatic come from behind victory scoring three runs in the bottom of the final two innings for a 7-6 victory Saturday against Region X foe USC Salkehatchie at Frazier Field.  

Louisburg improves to 41-6 overall, 16-6 in Region X, while USC Salkehatchie slips to 8-26, 3-11.


Game One
LC 8  USC-S 2

USC-S took a 1-0 lead in the first inning before the Hurricanes tied it 1-1 in the bottom of the second when Marcus Wojtkowciz singled, then scored on Tucker Coward's RBI single. 

With the scored tied 2-2 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, the 'Canes stretched the lead to 7-2 as Steve Nyisztor's walk started the five-run rally.  Zach Houchins reached on a fielder's choice, pushing Nyisztor to second, then Tyler Long's walk loaded the bases with one out.  A SAC fly to left field by Chris Robinson, a single by Wojtkowicz, and a double from Brandon Rawe emptied the bases bringing the score to 5-2. Chris King's RBI singled plated Rawe and Wojtkowicz to end the rally for the Hurricanes.    

Louisburg would score once more in the bottom of the sixth on a RBI single by Long that scored Zach Houchins. 

Brechbuehler (9-0) earned the victory after striking out seven and allowing six hits and two runs in six innings.

The Indian's Richard Carmichael (1-3) took the loss, walking four and allowing seven runs on seven hits in 4.2 pitched.

For Louisburg, King went 3-for-3 with three RBI and a homerun. Wojtkowicz went 2-for-2 with one RBI. 

 

Game Two
LC 7  USC-S 6

Louisburg's Tyler Long hit the game winning single that plated TJ Ehrsam in the seventh giving the 'Canes a 7-6 win.

Starting pitcher Tony Urban pitched 4.0 innings giving up five runs, nine hits, and three strike outs.  Daniel Hyatt worked 1.0 innings in relief striking out two and surrendered one run before closer Josh Roeder came in to pick up his fifth win of the year.  Roeder gave up one hit and struck out two batters in 1.0 innings pitched.

Salkehatchie's Jason Ritter (0-4) suffered the loss after walking two and giving up the game winning run in one inning pitched.

The Hurricanes got off to a quick 4-0 start in the first inning when Marcus Wojtkowicz's RBI single drove in Steve Nyisztor.  Brandon Rawe's home run to left field plated Wojtkowics and Houchins, then Tucker Coward's RBI single would bring home Chris King.

The Indian's hammered back tying the score 4-0 in the top of the third behind a three-run homer by Darius Osby and a RBI single from Ryan Walker.

In the fifth inning, Salkhatchie stretched their margin to 6-2 after Walker belted a homer plating two runs.

The 'Canes would answer in the bottom of the sixth tying the score at 6-6.  They would score both runs on back-to-back bases loaded walks by USC-S that score Augie Ayers and Coward.

Roeder pitched nearly perfect setting down two batters and forcing a fly out to keep the Hurricanes in the game heading into the home half of the seventh.

With Ehrsam at third, Long's grounder to the Indian's shortstop was misplaced allowing Ehrsam to score the winning run.

Tucker Coward batted 2-for-4 with one RBI, while Augie Ayers went 2-3 for the 'Canes.

 

Game Three
LC 6  USC-S 0

Cody Cox pitched a shutout with 10 strikeouts in Game 1 and Willie Sligh pitched his first complete game in Game 2 to win the series over USC Salkehatchie in Region X doubleheader action Sunday afternoon at Frazier Field.  The Hurricanes allowed no runs and no hits in Game 1 winning 6-0.  In the nightcap, Zach Houchins blasted his 13th homer of the season as the 'Canes finished the sweep, 5-0.

The Hurricanes defeated the Indians both games Saturday by scores of 8-2, 7-6. 

Louisburg improves to 43-6 overall, 18-6 in Region X while USC Salkehatchie falls to 8-28, 3-13.

Both teams remained scoreless until the 'Canes broke open the fourth with three runs on four hits. Tucker Coward's one-out single scored Chris King, and Jake Watson and Steve Nyisztor followed with back-to-back RBI singles plating Augie Ayers and Watson stretching the lead to 3-0.

Cox retired 3 out of the first 6 batters he faced in the first 2 innings while holding the Indians until the fifth inning for their first hit.

The Hurricanes padded their lead in the sixth. Watson led off with a walk, then Nyisztor advanced on a hit by pitch.  Houchins and Robinson would both double bringing in three RBI to open the lead to 6-0.

Zach Houchins led the 'Canes batting 2-for-4 with two RBI and a double. 


Game Four
LC 5  USC-S 0

In the nightcap, three Hurricanes delivered at least two hits, and starter Willie Sligh tossed a complete game of seven shutout innings as the 'Canes have won its last 15-out-of-18 games.

Louisburg opened up scoring in the first three innings going up 4-0 as the Indians would struggle to manufacture a hit after the second inning.  Sligh set down six hitters giving up only one hit in seven innings pitched. 

The Hurricanes would extend their lead in the top of the sixth to 5-0 off of Steve Nyisztor RBI double that plated Tucker Coward.

Tucker Coward batted 2-for-3 with one RBI and a two runs.  Houchins went 2-for-4 with one RBI and a home run.

The 'Canes return to action next weekend with a four-game series at USC-Sumter. The teams will play a double-header on Saturday and Sunday beginning at 1:00 p.m.
