Baseball Season Comes to an End
KINSTON, NC — The Louisburg College spring athletic season came to an end Wednesday afternoon as the Hurricanes baseball team was defeated 4-2 in the Region X tournament championship game. The Fire Ants of USC Sumter got the best of the Canes for the second day in a row, capping the Canes' season at 27-23.
John Stires (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) got his second start of the tournament but he only lasted one inning, giving up two runs on a pair of hits. Luke Emmett (Raleigh, NC/Leesville Road HS) took the loss out of the pen as he gave up two runs, on one hit, through four innings of relief work. Tyler Holt (Raleigh, NC/Cary Academy) and Ryan Puryear (South Boston, PA/Halifax County HS) combined to throw the final three innings where they shutout the Fire Ants.
LC outhit the Ants 10-7 and the top of the Hurricanes' order did the most damage as leadoff hitter Kory Shumate (Greensboro, NC/Grimsley HS) went 2-4, while two-hole hitter Cedric Mullins (Snellville, GA/Brookwood HS) finished his career as a Cane with a 4-5 effort. The speedy outfielder also knocked in one of the two Louisburg runs.
USC Sumter will move on to host the Eastern District Championship where they will be joined by regular season champions Spartanburg Methodist College.
