Two Wins On The Road For The Lady Hurricanes
The Lady Hurricanes softball team returned to action this weekend with a pair of road wins over Stanly Community College. LC opened up Sunday's double-header with a 5-2 victory behind Jamie Hockaday's complete game in the circle. The left-handed pitcher only gave up four total hits, as she improved to 1-1 on the season. The 'Canes swung the bats well early in game one as Morgan Tharrington lead the way with a 3-4 effort. Maci Burns and Hockaday also had multi-hit efforts as they each went 2-3 at the dish. Emily Mercer only managed one hit in the day's opener but she made the best of it, hitting the Hurricanes first homerun of the season when she hit a solo shot to center field to leadoff the third inning.
The 'Canes had to come from behind in game two as they were down 6-2 going in to the seventh inning. A five run rally and a great relief pitching effort by Megan Thompson sealed the deal in the 7-6 win. The Hurricanes pounded out 13 hits in game two, where Mercer again swung the big bat going 2-3 and driving in three RBI. Leadoff hitter Katrina Bartlett was also a big offensive threat as she went 2-4 with a double, a triple and a stolen base in the nonconference win.
The pair of wins improve the 'Canes to 3-1 on the season. The team will have another extended break before returning to the field on March 7th , when they travel to Surry Community College for another nonconference double-header.
