Welcome Home Champs
LOUISBURG, NC – The Louisburg College women's basketball team earned the program's third national title last Saturday and as they returned home they received a hero's welcome in the Seby B. Jones Performing Arts Center. Community leaders were on hand, including Louisburg Mayor Karl Pernell, numerous City Council members and both college faculty and staff joined in the packed lobby for an hour long celebration.
LC President, Dr. Mark La Branche welcomed all in attendance before introducing Director of Athletics, Mike Holloman who was the last women's basketball coach to win it all as he led the Lady 'Canes to a title in 1992. Holloman congratulated the team on their championship and introduced head coach, Brett Vana who led his team to a season record of 32-3, 4-0 at the National Tournament and he earned National Tournament Coach of the Tournament honors for his focus on the sidelines.
Vana gave the crowd in attendance some praise of his team, the instructors who have worked with them off the court and his administration. Vana also gave some insight into the team's road to victory that ended with the big game and a title.
The National Championship is the third for women's basketball ('81, '92, '13) which bettered a third place finish from the 2012 tournament.
