Football Opens With A Win
LOUISBURG, NC — The Louisburg College Hurricanes football team took to the field, Saturday afternoon, for the first time in 2013. After some early mistakes, the 'Canes settled down and took care of business, defeating Virginia Beach Institute, 41-12.
The first score of the season came by the way of the LC defense as they earned a safety midway through the first quarter. Late in the same quarter the Hurricane offense got in on the act as they capped off a 6 play, 40 yard drive with a RJ Washington (Ivanhoe, NC/Harrells HS) two-yard plunge into the end zone.
Louisburg doubled up on the Stallions in the second quarter as LC scored 12 total points to VBI's 6. Ryan Samuels (Fredericksburg, VA/Massopanax HS) hit a 32 yard field goal and the special teams unit earned another two points as the Canes blocked a point after try that was returned all the way to the house by Kenny Watt (Seneca, SC/Seneca HS). Louisburg finished off the half with their longest play of the game when Madison Mills (Winston Salem, NC/Carver HS) hooked up with John Wheatley (New Bern, NC/New Bern HS) on a 75 yard pass play. The Hurricanes went into the break with a 21-6 lead.
The Canes had three scores in the third quarter; two by the air and one on the ground. Mills hit Amir Williams (Athens, GA/Clarke Central HS) on a 63 yard pass play while Sean Campbell (Fredericksburg, VA/Massopanax HS) got some snaps and made the best of them hitting Bubba McDowell (Stanley, NC/East Lincoln) on a 35 yard score. RJ Washington got the other third-quarter score as he made a 15 yard run.
VBI had the final score of the ball game, the only score of the fourth quarter, but the LC defense stepped up as they squashed the Stallions two-point convert attempt.
The Hurricanes defense played well in their first regular season test and they were led by Stephen Williams (Reidsville, NC/Reidsville HS) who had five solo tackles and assisted on six others. Williams also picked up a sack and made three tackles for loss, totaling 13 yards. Kenny Watt did some damage on special teams and he also picked off a couple passes.
The Canes will return to the field next Saturday when they host Fork Union Military Academy at Old Franklinton HS. Opening kick is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
