Men's Golf Takes Second in Suffolk
On Wednesday, August 29, the men's golf team journeyed to Suffolk, Virginia to play in the Apprentice School Invitational. Four first year golfers and two sophomores made the journey to Sleepy Hole Golf Course where Louisburg alumnus and 1995 NJCAA Division III golfer All-American J.T. Belcher is the head golf professional. J.T. Belcher and his teammates earned third place in the 1995 NJCAA Division III National Championship. Sleepy Hole Golf Course is located on the peanut plantation owned by Italian immigrant Amedeo Obici, who founded the Planters Peanuts Company in Suffolk, Virginia in 1906.
Freshman Zach Robins (Southern Shores, NC) had an immediate impact on the team by posting a 3-under golf score on the par 72 golf course, earning him runner-up honors. Freshman Cal Addy (Newfield, NY) posted a 78, while freshman Clay Boerner (Statesboro, GA) posted an 81. The other three Hurricane golfers: Devin Herring (Castalia, NC), Juan Fernandez (Panama City, Panama) and Ty Niday (Lexington, NC) posted scores of 83.
Coach Charles Sloan indicated that the Hurricanes, the 2012 NJCAA Division III National Championship third place team, turned in a decent 311 score, but was beaten by the Apprentice School on their home course by eleven strokes. The entire course was waterlogged with several inches of water still standing in the sand traps where several golf balls were lost. The team dealt with the adverse situations very well and displayed remarkable team chemistry. Taking off for the Labor Day holiday this weekend, team members will compete against Surry Community College and North Carolina Wesleyan College in the Louisburg Confab Golf Tournament on Friday, September 7 at Bull Creek Golf & Country Club beginning at 2:30 PM.
