Lady Canes Start Region Tournament With a Bang
LOUISBURG, NC — The 4th seeded Lady Canes softball team opened up the 2014 Region X Tournament with a, 17-2, thumping of 5th seed, USC Salkehatchie, Friday morning.
Louisburg pounded out 16 total hits and they were led by frosh, Megon Smith (Garland, NC/Union HS) who went 3-4, smacked a pair of homeruns and drove in six RBI. The first baseman also scored three times and hit a double. Infielder, Tori Geissinger (Chesapeake, VA/Hickory HS) missed three weeks with an injury and she made her return to the lineup where she went 3-3 out of the leadoff spot. Geissinger also scored three times and stole one base. Lauren Simmons (Roanoke Rapids, NC/Roanoke Rapids HS) had been swinging the bat well lately and she continued to get it done at the plate as she went 2-3, hit a double and drove in two RBI in the playoff win.
Jennifer Allison (Denver, NC/East Lincoln HS) took to the circle where she had a no-hitter going through four innings. The frosh finished the five-inning game giving up a pair of runs, on two hits, and she fanned seven Indians hitters.
The Canes will take on top seeded Pitt CC tomorrow morning with a scheduled start of 10:30 am at Cotten Field.
