Pitt Tops Canes in Second Round

LOUISBURG, NC — The 4th seeded Louisburg College softball team advanced to the second round of the 2014 Region X Tournament where they were defeated, 4-0, by the #1 seed Pitt CC, Saturday morning.

The playoff game featured two of the region's best pitchers as LC frosh, and 2nd Team All-Region Pitcher, Megon Smith (Garland, NC/Union HS) faced off against the conference Pitcher of the Year Jamiee Radel (Swansboro, NC). Radel got the best of the Canes as she fanned 11 LC hitters, but she also allowed three hits and six walks. Smith fared well herself as she only allowed four runs, three earned, on seven hits, all while striking out five Bulldog hitters.

LC shortstop, Tori Geissinger (Chesapeake, VA/Hickory HS) got one of the Lady Canes three hits as she smacked a double in her final at bat. Geissinger also led off the game reaching base as she was hit by a pitch. Smith tried to help herself out at the plate where she also went 1-3 with a double.

The Canes are still alive in the double elimination tournament and they will take on #3 seed, USC Sumter in a loser-out game at 6:00 pm tonight. All games in the 2014 championship will be played at Cotten Field on the campus of Louisburg College.
