Lady Canes Knocked Out in Semifinal
LOUISBURG, NC — The Lady Canes softball team played three games on Saturday at the 2014 Region X Championship where their season came to a close with a 9-1 loss to Pitt CC. LC opened up the day with a 4-0 loss to PCC, then in a loser-out game the Canes knocked off USC Sumter, 4-3, setting the table for the semifinal rematch with Pitt CC.
Jennifer Allison (Denver, NC/east Lincoln HS) got the win against USC Sumter as she went the distance allowing three runs, on six hits. The frosh hurler also fanned seven Fire Ants in her second win of the 2014 championship tournament. Sierra McLaren (Guelph, Ontario/Guelph Collegiate Secondary) and Heather Howard (Angier, NC/West Johnston HS) led the way at the plate as they each went 3-4 in the win. Howard also smacked her first homerun of the postseason. Megon Smith (Garland, NC/Union HS) also did some damage at the plate as she went 2-4, with an RBI and a double.
Smith took to the circle in the Canes' final game where she took the loss. The freshman went 3.1 innings deep, where she allowed five runs, on six hits before giving way to Allison and Rebecca Norwood (Norlina, NC/Southern Vance HS) who each threw one inning.
Smith and Howard each had multi-hit efforts in the loss to Pitt as Howard went 2-2, with a double and a walk, while Smith went 2-3, with a double and she knocked in the Canes' only run. The Lady Canes finished the championship tournament in third place and close out 2014 with an overall record of 20-21.
