Hurricanes Sweep Southwest Virginia, Rally Past Richard Bland
The Louisburg College baseball team put together its strongest stretch of the young season over the last four games, sweeping a three-game set against Southwest Virginia before earning an 8-6 win over Richard Bland College on Wednesday afternoon at Frazier Field.
Hurricanes Dominate Southwest Virginia Series
Louisburg opened the weekend with an offensive explosion, defeating Southwest Virginia 26-4 in five innings.
The Hurricanes erupted for 11 runs in the second inning and never looked back. Camden Wilson led the charge with a four-hit, four-RBI performance, while Gavin Baucom drove in four runs of his own, including a home run. Jack Merrell added a homer, Brady Paul scored twice and drove in two, and Graham Wike continued his hot start with three hits and an RBI.
On the mound, Anthony Dorner earned the win with three solid innings, and Isaac Bennett and Anderson Lower closed it out.
In the weekend doubleheader finale, Louisburg rolled again, defeating Southwest Virginia 11-1.
The Hurricanes pounded out 11 hits, including home runs from Jace Dunn and Connor Wright. Dunn finished with two hits and two RBI, while Wright added two RBI of his own. Clifton Olmedo collected two hits and drove in a run, and Graham Wike recorded three hits and swiped three bases.
Henry Good picked up the win with three strong innings, allowing just one unearned run, and Simon Martone was dominant in relief, striking out five over three scoreless innings.
Across the series, Louisburg showcased its depth, speed, and power, outscoring Southwest Virginia 37-5 in the two games at Frazier Field.
Hurricanes Rally Past Richard Bland
Wednesday's matchup with Richard Bland proved to be a different type of test — one that required composure and timely execution.
Louisburg fell behind 1-0 in the third inning, but answered immediately in the bottom half. After Graham Wike singled and stole second, Brady Paul delivered a clutch double to put runners in scoring position. Reese File followed with a two-run double to give the Hurricanes a 2-1 lead.
Richard Bland regained the advantage in the fourth, capitalizing on hit batters and timely contact to go up 3-2. But once again, Louisburg responded.
In the fifth inning, Camden Wilson crushed a solo home run to tie the game at 3-3, swinging momentum back toward the Hurricanes.
The decisive blow came in the seventh.
With the game tied 3-3, Louisburg capitalized on pressure and situational hitting. Brady Paul singled and stole second to ignite the rally. Reese File reached on an error, bringing home a run. Wilson added another single to keep the inning alive, and after a balk plated another run, the Hurricanes continued to apply pressure.
Connor Wright delivered a key single to load the bases, and Payten Shipman drew a walk to force in a run. Moments later, Hayden Fones came through with a clutch two-RBI single to stretch the lead to 8-4.
Richard Bland mounted a late push in the ninth, scoring two runs, but the Hurricanes closed the door to secure the 8-6 victory.
Wilson finished 3-for-5 with a home run and an RBI. Paul added two hits and two runs scored while swiping a base. File drove in two runs, and Fones provided the game-changing two-RBI hit in the seventh.
On the mound, Michael Williams gave Louisburg five solid innings to keep the game within reach. Isaac Bennett earned the win with three strong innings of relief, allowing just one run and striking out four. Stephen Williams handled the ninth to seal the victory.
