Football 2025 Preview

Hurricanes Football Enters 2025 Season with High Expectations

LOUISBURG NC - Louisburg College Football enters the 2025 campaign riding the momentum of one of the most successful seasons in program history. The Hurricanes finished 2024 with an 8-2 record and advanced to the NJCAA Division III National Championship game for the first time in program history. That success has vaulted the program into national recognition, as Louisburg College opens the new year ranked No. 2 in the NJCAA Division II preseason poll.

Head Coach Quinderra Spellman said last season's success "stands alone" and provided a foundation the program is determined to build upon.

"It was a phenomenal feat for the program and definitely something we want to build on," Spellman said. "For us this season, we plan on staying true to the foundation of our program — helping our players become better people, students, and athletes — while correcting the things we needed to improve from last year."

The Hurricanes return a strong core with 38 returners from last year's roster, including several All-Americans and impact players. Offensively, tight end Jabari Rone (First-Team All-American), offensive lineman Sean Maertzig, receiver Quran Miller, quarterback Jameson Prince, and running back Evan Garrett headline a group looking to keep the Hurricanes' attack dynamic.

On defense, All-Americans Joanue Morten-Berry (safety), Kamal Thames (corner),  Letraskey Pressley (linebacker), and Keaton Braddock (defensive end) return after helping Louisburg record over 70 sacks in 2024. They'll be joined by veterans Jaylin Mczeke (defensive line) and Trevyn Smith (defensive back).

Spellman also pointed to newcomers expected to make an immediate impact, including offensive lineman Jhalil Winfield, tight end Mathias Barnwell, wide receiver Jaidon Lovett, defensive back Jerry Summers, and defensive lineman Dwayne Bryant.

In addition to roster depth, the coaching staff has made key adjustments to strengthen the program. Spellman himself has returned to the defensive side of the ball, adding two new coaches to bring additional leadership and schematics.

The standard, according to Spellman, remains high.

"Our players have really grown as a cohesive unit and are holding each other accountable. The leadership has been a lot better since last year. Fans can expect a team that plays fast, plays physical, and carries itself with discipline, resilience, and tenacity."

The Hurricanes will get their first test in a scrimmage against Methodist University on Saturday, August 23, at 11 a.m. at the Louisburg High School football field.
