Hurricanes to Host No. 3 Hudson Valley on Youth Day
Louisburg, N.C. – The Louisburg College football team returns home on Saturday for its first matchup against another NJCAA Division III opponent, hosting No. 3–ranked Hudson Valley Community College at 11 a.m. at Louisburg High School. The contest is also designated Youth Day, with free admission for fans 13 and under.
The Hurricanes (0-2) are seeking their first win of the season after falling 39-29 last week at Presbyterian College JV. Head Coach Quinderra Spellman said he was proud of the way his team battled on the road against a four-year program.
"There was a time when we were down by more than two or three scores, and we fought back into the game and gave ourselves a chance to win in the end," Spellman said on Sports Talk WIZS Henderson. "That's really all you can ask for when you're playing good competition."
Hurricanes at a Glance
Through two games, the Hurricanes' offense has been balanced. Quarterbacks Jon Bissonnette (195 yards, 3 TDs) and Jameson Prince (150 yards, 1 TD) have split snaps, while freshman running back Jazear Griffin has emerged as a spark in the ground game with 114 rushing yards on 17 carries (6.7 avg) and one touchdown.
In the passing game, receiver Jabari Rone has been a reliable target, hauling in 10 receptions for 136 yards and two scores. Dajuan Gibson has added 81 yards on four catches. Kicker Jadon Moore has been perfect on the season, connecting on all five field goal attempts, including a long of 40 yards.
Defensively, Kamal Thames and Letraskey Pressley lead the team with 12 tackles apiece, while Keaton Braddock has been disruptive in the backfield with 3.5 sacks.
Scouting the Vikings
Hudson Valley (2-0) had an impressive 41-29 win over Hocking College last week. Quarterback Nathan Stone threw for 285 yards and four touchdowns, including three scoring strikes to Micah Gates (8 receptions, 100 yards, 3 TDs) and another long touchdown to Damien Santiago (4 receptions, 106 yards, 1 TD).
The Vikings also showed balance in the run game, with Chanse Bonner (39 yards) and Dylan Maye (32 yards) leading a committee effort. Defensively, Dominic Jones posted 10 total tackles and a sack.
Coach Spellman emphasized that the key for Louisburg is playing clean football.
"More games are lost than won," Spellman said. "For us, the first two weeks, turnovers were something we had to correct. The number one thing is eliminating penalties. If we can do that, I think we'll be in a good position."
