Louisburg College Mourns Passing of Legendary Basketball Coach J. Enid Drake

Louisburg, NC – 2/5/2026 – Louisburg College is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Hall of Fame men's basketball coach Jasper Enid Drake, a cornerstone of Hurricanes athletics and one of the most influential figures in junior college basketball history. His impact on the College, its student-athletes, and the broader Region X basketball community is immeasurable.

Coach Drake's tenure at Louisburg College spanned 42 seasons as head men's basketball coach from 1965 until his retirement in 2006, establishing him as one of the most enduring and successful coaches in junior college history. Over that time, he compiled a remarkable 697 victories, led the Hurricanes to three Region X titles and five runner-up finishes, and became a respected competitor and mentor across the NJCAA landscape.

In recognition of his contributions to the sport, Coach Drake was inducted into the NJCAA Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2001, an honor reserved for those whose careers have elevated the game and influenced countless student-athletes.

Beyond the wins and accolades, Coach Drake's legacy is defined by the relationships he built. Players, assistants, colleagues, and opponents alike speak of a coach who demanded excellence, but also cared fiercely about the development of young men on and off the court. His influence is woven into the fabric of Louisburg College — from the J. Enid Drake Endowed Scholarship for Men's Basketball, established by family and friends in 2010 to support future Hurricanes, to the locker rooms and programs shaped by his presence for decades.

"We are saddened by the loss of Coach Drake," said Athletic Director Mike Holloman. "His devotion to Louisburg College and to our student-athletes helped define this institution's spirit. Generations of Hurricanes carry his lessons with them, and his legacy will always be remembered at Louisburg College."

Coach Drake's passion extended beyond the sidelines. He was an active member of the Louisburg community and a mentor to athletes who went on to careers in basketball, education, business, and public service. Former players frequently recall his leadership as foundational to their success, both athletically and personally.

Louisburg College extends its deepest condolences to the Drake family and all who were touched by his life.
