Golf Finishes Strong Over the Weekend

LOUISBURG, NC - Hosting Friday's Louisburg Bullfight Summons Intercollegiate Golf Tournament at Bull Creek Golf & Country Club, The Hurricanes (310) beat Surry CC (314) and Sandhills CC (318) in stroke play competition, but lost once again to North Carolina Wesleyan College (300). 

Juan Fernandez (Panama City, Panama) tied for second place overall with a 75 in a round that finished in darkness that made it almost impossible to see the ball more than 50 yards away.  Cal Addy (Newfield, New York) scored a 77, with Sumner Tate (Raleigh, NC) and Ty Niday (Lexington, NC) finishing at 79, while Zach Robins (Southern Shores, NC) finished with an 81.

Hosting a day-long golf tournament on Saturday, at Bull Creek Golf & Country Club, the Canes (307) beat Johnston CC (321), but lost to Sandhills CC (295) and Surry CC (304) in the first 18 holes. Coming back in the second round of the day, the 'Canes (298) edged out Sandhills CC (299), Surry CC (305) and Johnston CC (330). 

The format of the Louisburg Iron Team Clash Modified Stableford Intercollegiate Golf Tournament is a one-of-a kind golf tournament that no other junior or senior college sponsors. The tournament pits each golfer against two other collegiate golfers for approximately 9 to 9½ hours in completing 36 holes of competition, playing the course twice in the same day while walking and carrying their own golf clubs about 12 miles. In the Modified Stableford competition, Louisburg College (-36 points) finished in second place to Sandhills CC (-2 points), while Surry CC (-53 points) finished in third and Johnston CC (-116 points) finished in fourth place. 

After one round, LC golfer, Juan Fernandez found himself in fourth place with zero points, but scored eight in the second round to finish at eight overall, helped by an eagle (earning 5 points for those 3 strokes) on the par 5 ninth hole. 

In the Spring 2012 Hurricane Fusillade Challenge Modified Stableford Intercollegiate Golf Tournament Championship also played at Bull Creek, Fernandez finished the golf tournament as the champion with a two point win over Nick Thompson of Sandhills CC. 

Louisburg golfer Zach Robins scored -4 and 2, while Clay Boerner (Statesboro, GA) scored -3 and -6, Cal Addy scored -8 and -4, Devin Herring (Castilla, NC) scored -9 and -11, and Ty Niday scored -13 and -8 points.

The Hurricanes will continue with their busy schedule as they host individual golfers from Central Carolina CC and Chowan University for 18 holes of stroke play at The River Golf & Country Club at Lake Royale on Tuesday with a 1:30 shotgun tee time.
