The Louisburg College men's cross country team closed out its season on Saturday   City, Iowa—competing through a snowstorm that transformed the race into one of the most challenging events of the year.

What was forecast early in the week as a mild, 60-degree afternoon quickly changed as a winter system swept through the Midwest. By race morning, temperatures hovered around 34 degrees with steady snowfall blanketing the course. Nearly four inches had accumulated by the start of the men's race, creating slick footing and low visibility for all competitors.

Despite the drastic shift in conditions, the Hurricanes adjusted quickly. Head coach Marshall Leonard and his team bundled up in gloves, headgear, tights, and hand warmers—an uncommon look for a squad that trained mostly in warmer weather throughout the fall.

When the gun sounded, Derrick Harris charged into the lead pack and held his position through the early stages, fighting through the snow and ice as the storm intensified. Across the field, runners battled to stay upright and maintain pace on the frozen ground. By the finish, the Hurricanes were cold, soaked, and visibly drained—but every athlete crossed the line with effort and pride.

One of the lasting images of the day came after the race. As each Louisburg runner finished, he waited for the next teammate, forming a small huddle of Hurricanes at the end of the chute.

"When I saw the guys stay and wait for each other, that was a touching moment," Leonard said. "It showed how much they care for one another and how deeply they respect the work each teammate has put in."

While northern teams—more accustomed to winter racing—held an advantage in the final standings, Leonard praised his team's toughness and attitude.

"This was absolutely a race that favored northern colleges," Leonard said. "They were prepared for the conditions, and they took advantage of it. But I'm proud of how our guys handled it. They never stopped competing."

The national meet officially concludes the cross country season for Louisburg. The Hurricanes now turn their attention to indoor track and field, carrying the same resilience, teamwork, and competitive spirit that defined their fall campaign.
