Women's Basketball awaits Regular Season Play

The women's basketball team finished 17-9 overall and 7-7 in league play last season and looks forward to beginning regular season play this spring.

Notable returners include sophomore Charmille Browne from Charlotte, NC. Browne is a vocal leader. She makes sure everybody is where they need to be and that they are doing what they need to do. According to Coach Rasnake, "If we have a lull in practice Charm is the one who steps and makes sure that it gets corrected. The freshmen look to her for guidance on how to be a college athlete."

Aniylah Bryant is back as well, leading by example. According to Coach Rasnake, "She's obviously a talented player, but she brings another level of commitment that is a good example for the rest of the team." Bryant averaged 17 points and 5 rebounds in her freshman season. Along with Bryant, point guard Jainaya Jones is a returning all-conference player.

Kadajah Walker is a first year player who has been a good leader on the court, and by Coach Rasnake's evaluation is going to be a really quality player.

Among other talented freshmen is 6'4 center Makayla Everette. "Makayla is going to bring us something that not everybody in our league has," said Coach Rasnake. "She is going to be hard to prepare for and that's going to help the whole team overall."

"If there's any silver lining to this delayed season is that it gives our freshmen extra practice time to learn our system and I think that is going to help us in January."

Last year the Hurricanes peaked at the end of the year, playing extremely well in the last few games. The roster was firing on all cylinders and scoring points. Going into the tournament the women had a lot of confidence and that paid off with a run to the championship game where they beat the #1 seed in the semi finals.

Thinking ahead to 2020-2021 region play Coach Rasnake commented, "Catawba Valley and Cape Fear will be our biggest challenges. I think USC-Salkehatchie has done a really good job with their new coach and they look like they will be a contender as well, so we know its not going to be an easy road through Region X."

The women's basketball team will return to campus in January with only six days to prepare for their first game at Spartanburg Methodist College. Last year the Hurricanes also opened up with Spartanburg Methodist and the game ended in an overtime loss for Louisburg. Coach Rasnake concluded, "We gained a lot from competing with them that day, and I would expect it is going to be very similar this year."
