Hurricanes Defense and Special Teams Fuel 27–9 Win at Sussex

Augusta, N.J. – Louisburg College delivered a complete team effort on Saturday, defeating Sussex County Community College 27–9 at Skylands Stadium. The Hurricanes used a dominant defensive performance, key plays on special teams, and a balanced offensive attack to secure their second straight victory and first road win of the season.

After a scoreless first quarter that included a blocked punt and two missed field goals, the Hurricanes broke through midway in the second. Sussex attempted a short field goal, but Tycorien Gist broke through the line to block the kick and returned it nearly 70 yards for a touchdown. The score gave Louisburg a 6–0 lead at halftime.

The third quarter featured wild momentum swings. Sussex briefly pulled ahead with a safety and an interception return for a touchdown, but Louisburg responded quickly. Quarterback Jon Bissonnette found running back Evan Garrett on a nine-yard touchdown pass to put the Canes back in front, then connected with wide receiver Vontrez Burch on a 20-yard strike later in the quarter.

Louisburg pulled away in the fourth behind its running game. Freshman back Jazear Griffin ripped off consecutive carries to the two-yard line, setting up Garrett for a short touchdown run to extend the lead. The defense capped the win by forcing a bad snap into the end zone for a safety in the final minute.

The Hurricanes' defense was disruptive throughout. Trevyn Smith made a sideline interception in the second quarter, while Jamison Avila added another late pick. DJ Bryant recorded a key second-half sack, and Keaton Braddock was active off the edge.

Louisburg now enters its bye week at 2–2 and will take on Georgia Military College on Saturday, Oct. 4 at 3 p.m. at Brookland-Cayce High School in South Carolina.
